Development of the E-E Detector by Using a Thin Plastic Scintillator

Abstract

We design a detector for identifying protons and deuterons by using the different energy losses in a thin plastic scintillator. We develop a plastic scintillator by adding PPO (2.5-diphenyloxazolyl) and POPOP (1,4-bis-2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)) in polystyrene. A weight concentration ratio is 100 : 1 : 0.05 for fluoresscence (styrene : PPO : POPOP). The efficiency of the plastic scintillator was found to be 99.92 $pm$ 0.08 \% compared to that of BC-408 by using cosmic ray. We developed thin plastic scintillators with a thickness of 300 $m{mu}$m and measured the optical properties. We also studied the discrimination power between protons and deuterons produced in $p+$Cu reactions at 50 MeV
